Healthy Food Choices During the School Day

Moreland School District staff takes seriously our role in helping to curb child obesity and diabetes. Our wonderful partnership with Sodexo provides healthy food choices for students each day through our breakfast and lunch programs. You may not be aware of the fact that school districts are required and monitored by the California Department of Education to not serve any food to students, during the school day, that do not meet the state and federal guidelines as healthy.

Sexual Health Education in 7th Grade and Parent Education Nights

Comprehensive sexuality education has proven to increase positive health outcomes for students. Moreland has chosen a new curriculum called Positive Prevention Plus aligned with CA Education Code 51933 and the California Healthy Youth Act. Human sexuality sessions will be taught during 7th grade science classes from mid-May 2017 through June 9, 2017. This course uses up-to-date and medically accurate health information to address many of the health issues students face, or may face, in their lifetime.

It is a state requirement that parents or guardians be notified prior to instruction and be offered the opportunity to withhold their child’s participation by submitting an opt-out notification form. If you wish to have your 7th grade student not participate in sexual health instruction, please complete the opt-out form that was mailed to your home or get an additional form in your child’s school office. All opt-out forms are due to your child’s school office by Friday, April 28, 2017. Students not participating in the instruction will be given other academic assignments to be completed during the class period in a location to be determined by the school’s administrators.

The Moreland School District invites you to learn more about the curriculum, to review the class materials, and to hear from the health experts during two parent information meetings. Both events will be held at the Moreland Community Center, from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on the following dates and topics:

Wednesday, March 1st: Comprehensive Sexuality Education & Positive Prevention Plus Curriculum Overview
Parents will receive an overview of the state law, walk through of lessons, and the opportunity to talk to a Positive Prevention Plus curriculum specialist.

Thursday, March 23rd: Creating an Ongoing Dialogue on Sexual Health with Your Child at Any Age & Stage
Parents will learn about the social and emotional needs of teens and learn how to establish a healthy dialogue with their children as they become fully literate about a variety of sexual health topics.

Babysitting will be available for both of these parent education evenings. To sign up for these parent information nights, please visit or contact the Moreland Student Services Department at 408-874-2951.

Moreland Wants to Hear from our Parents!

Moreland Wants to Hear from our Parents

Moreland School District continues another school year of academic accomplishments, supportive teachers and staff, and community activities such as family nights, walk-a-thons, and music festivals. As part of the District’s Strategic Plan, Moreland is conducting a survey to gather information about what you think and feel about your child’s school.

Our 2017 Education for the Future Survey will take about five minutes to complete and is available online March 13th-31st for your convenience. If you do not have access to a computer, or wish to take the survey in Spanish, hard copies will also be available during those dates in the school office. If you have children that attend two different schools, please complete one survey for each school site. Please remember that the survey is completely confidential. Answers are tabulated by an outside company, and the survey results will be presented at a future School Board meeting.

As a parent in the Moreland School District, your input and ideas about our school district are important. You can help us do the best possible job of educating our children by taking a few minutes to complete this survey.

To get started, please go to the following link or go to Latimer’s website and click on the link under the Parent tab.
